12 years at GESS and still counting, we chat with Ian on his roles here over the years, and what keeps him going strong.
Tell us about yourself, your academic and career background. How long have you been in Singapore and in GESS? What made you join GESS?
I grew up in rural Queensland, Australia working on the land before heading to university to study teaching. I finished my Bachelors in Primary Education, then taught in Brisbane before heading to the UK. I spent 5 years in London teaching at an inclusive primary school that catered for students with severe special needs. My wife and I then moved to Singapore and we have spent the last 18 years teaching in the IB system. I specialise in the upper primary years, but have taught from Grade 2 through Grade 7.
I have been working at GESS for the past 12 years. I was drawn to GESS because of its not-for-profit status and unique, family-oriented environment. In my time here, I have taken on a number of roles: from homeroom teacher, Grade Level Coordinator, swim teacher, and for the last year, I have been enjoying the role as Deputy Director of Pastoral Care.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching at GESS and I believe it is the best school for my family. My wife teaches in the European Section and we have 3 children attending primary and middle school here. I am proud to be both a staff member and a parent at GESS, as we provide a high-quality, well-rounded education in a diverse and supportive setting.
You mentioned your new portfolio as Deputy Director in pastoral care. Could you share with our readers what this involves and why this is important to GESS students?
As Deputy Director in Pastoral Care, my role primarily revolves around supporting the wellbeing of the students and staff in my assigned section. I work closely with the teachers and students to foster a positive and supportive school environment. This involves active listening, providing resources, organising events, and collaborating with other staff members to ensure holistic support for those under our care. Ultimately, my goal is to help develop a nurturing and inclusive learning environment where everyone feels valued, supported, and is proud to be a member of the GESS family.
What is a typical day at work for you at GESS?
What I enjoy about my job is that every day offers something different. Working in an environment with children is never predictable. I love working closely with the students, teachers, and the wider school community. My main aim is to provide support for the children under our care and ensure they have a positive experience at GESS. During my day, I coordinate special events, teacher training, assemblies and I also enjoy my lessons down at the pool teaching the Grade 1 and 2 students how to swim.
What are some challenges that you encounter in your role at GESS? And how do you overcome them?
There are many challenges within a school setting, some more complex than others. However, I believe that having a supportive and professional team helps. We have amazing staff who are positive and proactive, whom I can approach to help deal with any issue that may develop.
What motivates you in your work with children?
Our students are the real motivators. When you walk through the gates in the morning, there is a positive vibe buzzing around the campus. The primary students are always bright and cheerful, and their enthusiasm is infectious. It’s a great way to start the day! I find it rewarding to see students grow as learners and individuals. It is a real bonus to bump into the older students I have taught and see them successfully graduate and head off in all different directions around the world. My own children really enjoy attending GESS, especially my youngest daughter who never wants to miss a single day of Grade 1!
How do you see GESS’ commitment and approach to student wellbeing?
I believe that students reach their potential when they feel safe and supported in their learning environment. This is why I’m excited to participate in the school-wide initiative aimed at enhancing student wellbeing. The new Student Wellbeing Centre has been a wonderful addition for the students, parents and staff. It’s a fantastic resource for students to visit and a welcoming space where teachers and the student support services can share ideas to help guide our students. I’m really looking forward to developing the pastoral care programme in the primary years to enhance student wellbeing.
How has GESS empowered you to dedicate your best to our kids?
GESS has been a very supportive learning environment, where I have been able to develop my skills as an educator, and try new initiatives and different roles. For many years I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by excellent teachers and experienced colleagues, who have mentored and guided me throughout my career. I have also had exciting professional development opportunities, helping me strengthen and improve my practice as an educator.
What do you like to do in your personal time?
When I am not at school, I like to spend time with my family. I get great enjoyment from watching my kids play sport and cheering them on from the sideline. As a family, we love the beach and being outdoors. We like to surf, paddleboard and scuba dive. When I get the time, I enjoy mountain biking with my friends and playing touch rugby. I love food, trying new things, travelling, and meeting interesting people. Singapore is a great place to do all these things and I am so happy to call this home!
